How to Buy Used Tires

Let’s be honest: tires are expensive. Whether you need to replace a single tire or all four, new tires shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg. At Bessler’s, we have a wide variety of used tires that are ready to be back on the road!

That being said, there are some things you need to watch out for before purchasing used tires. If you’re considering buying used but don’t know where to start, check out our handy guide below.

Tips for Buying Used Tires

Look at the tread depth.

Tire tread is the first thing you should look at when considering buying used tires. If the tread is shallow, stay away! We recommend using the penny trick: simply take a penny, turn it upside down so Lincoln’s head is facing towards the tire, and insert it into the tread. If the top of Lincoln’s head is visible above the tread, we recommend looking at a different tire.

Check the tire age.

The next thing you should check is the age of the tire. You can check this based on the writing on the side of the tire – the week and year the tire was manufactured can be found at the end of the Tire Identification Number. The year will come first, followed by the week. If the tire is over five years old and shows other signs of wear and tear, Bessler’s recommends looking at another tire.

Look for general wear and tear.

Even if the tread is deep enough and the tire is less than five years old, you should still make sure that the tire has no visible signs of wear and tear. If there is cracking, bubbles in the sidewalls, patches, or chunks missing, don’t purchase the tire. If you do, you could be putting yourself at risk for an accident due to the tire popping and causing an accident.
